When Social Media Directors miss the boat - Swiffer

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

Interesting article on how Brands are entering Social Media but what caught my eye was this quote:

“Swisher…Swiffer. I wouldn’t put that on my [Facebook] profile,” said Tim Kendall, Facebook’s director of monetization.

Followed by these facts:

Don’t tell that to a dozen or Facebook groups devoted to Swiffer, although these groups are sparsely populated. “Ive Discovered The Joys of Swiffer and I Can’t Stop…” has 55 members. “I love my swiffer duster!!!” has five members who made this appeal: “Cleaning nerds that love there swiffers should join this group…because we f*ing rule!!”

It seems that even though you work for the fastest growing Social Media Network doesn’t mean you necessarily ‘get it’. Good read.

Image based emails dont work - Stop It!

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

I love the marketing emails I get. I choose to get them cause I want to know about sales and new products from the vendors I choose. The problem is that they are all Image based because the Marketers are lazy. This means that when I open them I see nothing cause Google Apps blocks images by default unless I turn them on. Stop It!

A new study from the E-Mail Experience Council turned up this frightening fact: e-mail from 23 percent of the retailers reviewed was “completely unintelligible” when viewed in an inbox.

The reason? When designing e-mail marketing messages, marketers overlook the fact that images are blocked, by default, for approximately one in two e-mail users. The e-mail council points out that workarounds — namely the use of HTML text and images — are not sufficiently being used in e-mail design.

Hillary Still Wants Yer Money - ClickZ - News and expert advice for the digital marketer since 1997

Hillary may be on her way out, but she still wants your money. I had to chuckle when a message arrived in my inbox this morning, signed by Hillary Clinton, affirming her plans to “extend my congratulations to Senator Obama and my support for his candidacy” Saturday.

Scottsdale Council approves final funding for Paolo Soleri bridge - Phoenix Business Journal:

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

Sounds cool, I will have to go check it out. It sounds like it will go in by the Scottsdale Fashion Square Mall connecting the shops on the canal:
“It will feature two steel-clad, 64-foot pylons that will generate a light beam on the walking surface of the bridge to mark solar events and reiterate the connection of humans to the environment, light and architecture,” said the new release. “The plaza on the south side of the canal features a second set of pylons, which will house the largest bell assemblage ever created by the artist. Cast bronze bells are the signature retail item of Soleri’s Cosanti studio.”

June 4th Wrap Up - iPhone 2 and Singularity, originally uploaded by halfacat.

iPhone 2 is clogging my brainwaves. 3g and GPS! OMFG! I need it I need it!!!!!
Oh and then I got bit by the Singularity bug by Tracy A Sheridan. She came out of the blue following me on Twitter today and blew my mind when I saw she was blogging about the Singularity and its effects on Business. If you are hearing Singularity for the first time please catch up. Its only the most significant event on the horizon in regards to a fundamental shift in human existence (that was kinda ugly, oh well).

What are your thoughts on thinking machines and human’s evolution with them?

From CNN Money - “Downsizing the American home”

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

Good read on how builders are changing their focus and building cheaper homes. I bet the McMansion owners are really happy about this. Ouch!

So if those first-timers who sat out the era of the McMansions and the McMortgages start buying these modest homes, Mezger may go down in the annals of real estate as the man who saved The House That Eli Broad Built. He’ll also need to expand his crooning repertoire. On karaoke nights, he usually caps the evening by singing “Unforgettable.” Since his music collection harks back to the 1930s, investors are hoping that he may soon be singing another classic: “We’re in the Money.”
